ballesterer #169 - War in Ukraine

In light of current events, the new issue focuses on war and its impact on sports.

After Russia's attack on Ukraine, ballesterer has thrown plans for issue #169 out the window and instead reports on the war and the tremors it has caused in soccer as well. They write about the long ingratiation of the federations to Vladimir Putin and their quick dissociation - rarely has politics shown itself so clearly in soccer as in these weeks. They also present a short history of Ukrainian soccer and solidarity actions of European curves. In the interview, Ingo Petz talks about his work with the organization Fankurve Ost in Ukraine.

For the feature, ballesterer took a trip to Belgian league leaders Union Saint-Gilloise, and Klaus Federmair reports on the long wait for success in the Brussels suburbs. There is a portrait of Julian Nagelsmann, who is increasingly becoming the face of FC Bayern, and a tale of the oldest soccer tournament in Asia, the Durand Cup in India. The magazine also commemorates the writer and Sturm fan Gerhard Roth, who died in February at the age of 80.
