The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar was one of the most controversial events in the history of modern sport. After Qatar won the bid to host the event in 2010, allegations of corruption were raised. Qatar was criticised above all for its human rights violations: From the exploitation of migrant workers on World Cup construction sites and female domestic workers, to state discrimination against LGBTIQ+ and restrictions on freedom of assembly and the press.
More than a year after the controversial FIFA Men's World Cup 2022, the event is intended to provide an impetus to bring the topic of sport and human rights more into the focus of the Austrian parliament and Austrian sport.
