We need your help: swimming pool wanted!

For swimming courses for women with refugee experience

For women with migration, refugee and also violence experience, we are looking for a suitable swimming pool where they can learn to swim undisturbed.
We have already tried a number of places: municipal pools, hotels, fitness centers, apartment buildings. So far without success... Now we hope for the decisive tip from the (sports) community!

"The inhibition threshold to go to the public bath is extremely high for women: body shaming, harassment and the debate about male-free bathing zones. There is a great need for 'safe' swimming classes, which we want to cover."
Negina Naseri, Project Manager

Background

Many refugees do not know how to swim. This concerns especially women, for whom certain sports were forbidden in their countries of origin. The project "Prevention of violence and personal development for women through sports" offers the opportunity to learn how to swim in a protected environment. In addition to the health aspect, swimming together is intended to strengthen the networking among the women and promote social participation and social recognition. The focus is on the personal development of the women. Long-term goals are the foundation of an independent association and cooperation with swimming associations in Vienna.

Contact

Without a swimming pool, however, the project cannot start, so we ask for tips, hints and contacts by mail to fairplay[AT]vidc[DOT]org.

The project is implemented within the framework of SPIN Refugees and with the support of Frauen helfen Frauen and our institute VIDC.
