SCREENSHOT - Open Air Football Film Festival
September 5-8, 2024
1210 Vienna, Jedlersdorfer Platz 25, 1210 Vienna

Over four days, the OPEN AIR FOOTBALL FILM FESTIVAL SCREENSHOT presents selected documentaries, feature films and short films as well as exciting discussions on all relevant and less relevant aspects of the world of film and football. Despite all the enthusiasm for film and football, we also stand for a critical examination of the social and political effects and tendencies of football, which can be found in the film program, discussion rounds, side programs and presentations.

SCREENSHOT is intended to be a first step in this direction, initially as an open-air festival, without a competition and conceived purely as a festival for the public.

NEXT GOAL WINS
US 2023, 103 Min., OmU

American Samoa measures just under 200 square kilometers. The archipelago in the South Pacific is part of the United States' foreign territory and is home to just 45,000 inhabitants. The human resources to field a national soccer team are limited. When the team lost 0:31 to Australia in a World Cup qualifier in 2001, American Samoa wrote itself into soccer history as the worst team in the world.New Zealand director and Oscar winner Taika Waititi shows a big heart for losers and tells the story of the team trying to get back on its feet ten years after the traumatic defeat in the feel-good comedy "Next Goal Wins". The president of the soccer association, Tavita, decides to recruit a specialist from abroad.

Culture clash comedy in the South Pacific: "Next Goal Wins" features wonderfully original characters. Director Taika Waititi directs with charming humor and a good feel for Polynesian culture. A movie for all choleric people who want to chill out.

KOPFBALL
AT 2008, 11 Min.
Director: Eva Hausberger

"When an expression on a face suggests an invisible cause, it becomes a mirror for the imagination." (Béla Balázs) - Where else is it possible to indulge in emotions as freely as in sport, and where in sport if not in football? The film tells the story of a football match through the actions and reactions of the fans. The trigger for their emotions remains largely off-screen. The fan becomes the medium that broadcasts the match. The Döblinger Kojoten (Vienna FC) and the friends of the Friedhofstribüne (Wiener Sportklub) stand opposite each other. They deliver the match. Man against man, team against team. May the best man win!

ISTANBUL UNITED
DE/TR 2014, 90 Min., OmU
Director: Farid Eslam, Olli Waldhauer

For years, the Ultra fans of the three most important football clubs in Istanbul (Galatasaray, Fenerbahçe and Beşiktaş) have been known worldwide for their unconditional support of their teams. Their mutual rivalry often ends in extremely violent confrontations with numerous injuries and even deaths. But in the summer of 2013, something extraordinary happened: during the protests and clashes against the Turkish government and Prime Minister Erdogan in Gezi Park, the rival fan clubs united for the first time for a common cause. People who are notorious for their hatred now stand side by side and fight against the ruling system in Turkey under the name "Istanbul United". Taking stock at the end: The protests ended on June 15, 2013, claiming eight lives and injuring almost 8,000 people. What remains is difficult for the protagonists to put into words. "Hope", say most of them. "A new park culture", says another. In fact, the main proof is that sport can be political, or at least that its supporters are. The government is trying to ban chants with a message from the stands, but to no avail. Because: "Taksim is everywhere, resistance is everywhere!" - even in the stadium.

VIENNA SHORTS presents: FOOTBALL FOR EVERYONE
SO LOUD THE SKY CAN HEAR US,
Lavinia Xausa, NL 2022, 20:40 Min.
BALLS, Gorana Jovanović, RS/SL 2022, 22:30 Min.

Football and the fans. Football and nationalism. Football and attention. Football and the love of the game. While the European Championship is history and the championship and the Champions League are underway in all countries, we dedicate four films to those topics that we cannot avoid when we think of the most popular sport in the world. There is singing and raving, staging and discussing, shaking and playing; we watch the action from the outside and are suddenly right in the middle of it. The ball may be round, but the game has many rough edges ... (Daniel Hadenius-Ebner, Doris Bauer)

REPLAY ´08
AT 2008, 11 Min.
Director: Peter Hörmanseder

Cordoba 1978: A reflection on the Austria-Germany match that has become a myth. The replay of a replay of a replay. Hans Krankl in a frenzy of joy, the slow motion almost brought to a standstill. "Three to two for Austria. After 47 years, ladies and gentlemen. A world-class team playing there today." That's not just how Austrian sports presenter Edi Finger felt 30 years ago, it's how a large proportion of the Austrian population still remembers it today. German radio presenter Armin Hauffe took a sober view: "Germany lost to Austria in a match by three points to two. It was a weak international match. That was it here from Cordoba."

DIAMANTE – FUSSBALLGOTT
AT/DE/BR 2023, 96 Min. OmU
Directors: Georg Nonnenmacher, Karin Berghammer, Ingo Haeb
with Gerd Dahlheimer, Herbert Prohaska, Toni Polster, Josef Hickersberger, Andrea Steiner and many more

In Diamante, the directing trio Georg Nonnenmacher, Karin Berghammer and Ingo Haeb tell the incredible story of professional footballer Rudi Varda using numerous archive recordings. He was regarded as an exceptional talent in the mid-1970s, but never got beyond the status of a second division player and disappeared from the scene in Germany in 1982 after numerous escapades. An entertaining personal search for clues that will keep even non-football fans on the edge of their seats until the very last second.

The brothers Rudi and Ferdi have been passionate about soccer since their childhood in the 1970s. Nowadays, only Ferdi does his rounds at his home soccer pitch in Rübenach, Germany - when he draws the pitch markings with his chalk wagon as groundsman. His brother Rudi, on the other hand, made a career as a professional footballer. He played in the Austrian Bundesliga and moved to Vienna. Contact between the two has been broken off for years. However, when Ferdi suddenly learns that Rudi later emigrated to Brazil and is revered there as a legendary soccer god under the name "Diamante", he sets out in search of him.

This mockumentary explores the question of how the unsuccessful professional footballer Rudi Varda rose to become one of the most revered ball wizards in Brazil.
