This Human World Filmfestival 2024 – Report

After an impressive festival kick-off on November 27, the first cooperation film between the Our Game for Human Rights project coordinated by fairplay and the This Human World film festival was shown on December 6: The screening of the Colombian film LA SUPREMA took place in the Schikaneder Cinema as part of the film focus on Sport & Human Rights / Cine Latino.

Young Laureana does not want to follow the expectations of her grandmother or society. When she reads in the newspaper that her estranged uncle will soon be competing in a world boxing championship in Venezuela, she gets the whole village to watch the event live. The problem: there is neither electricity nor a television in the village. Together with Efraín, her uncle's trainer, she ventures on a trip to the big city. Felipe Holguín Caro's film shows the lively village of La Suprema and tells of cohesion, tradition and the desire to write history together.

The screening of SAMIA took place at Top Kino on December 8. This film is based on the true story of Somali sportswoman Samia Yusuf Omar:

Samia grows up in Mogadishu, Somalia. In the midst of a country torn apart by civil war, she finds solace in long-distance running. Despite constant threats from militias who reject sport for women, she pursues her goal of competing in the Olympic Games. At just 17 years old, her dream came true when she was allowed to represent her country in Beijing in 2008. But returning home brings new challenges. In Samia, Yasemin Şamdereli paints a sensitive portrait of an athlete who risks everything to follow her dream and hope for a better future.

The film was followed by a discussion in which we welcomed director Yasemin Şamdereli and activist Fadumo Ahmed-Mohamud (deputy chairwoman of the Somali association BKI in Vienna) to the podium. Around 80 participants had the opportunity to ask questions about the filming and learn more from the experts about the current situation of Somali women, the responsibility of sports associations and the importance of role models.
