Working Group Gender & Sexual Diversity in Sport

Since April 2022, fairplay has been coordinating a Europe-wide Erasmus+ project that is committed to a sports landscape that is open to all people regardless of gender and sexual identity.

The topic of sexual and gender diversity in sport is becoming increasingly important and affects many stakeholders. This is not only evident in the IOC's request to the international federations to consult on regulations that are inclusive and respect the dignity of people on the one hand, and that make sense and are comprehensible from a sporting perspective on the other. There are also more and more requests from athletes who are currently excluded from organised sport due to their gender identity. And all people have the right to participate in sport and to be protected from discrimination.

Implementing gender diversity in everyday sport poses challenges for clubs and associations, for which we want to try to find solutions together through dialogue, sharing best practice, building knowledge and raising awareness.

About the working group

As part of the Sport for all Genders and Sexualities project, working groups on gender & sexual diversity in sport are being set up in five European countries with relevant stakeholders. These groups will exchange ideas and discuss the topic: Critically monitor the ideas and results of the project and adapt them to the specific needs of (organised) grassroots sport and bring them into sport. This will enable us to work together to find practical, sustainable and inclusive solutions and support for grassroots sport.

The Austrian working group has already met twice since February 2023 and will meet again in autumn.
